"This is the best of me," wrote Elgar on completing what is universally regarded as the greatest of all British oratorios. Lush orchestration, massed forces and profound subject matter, The Dream of Gerontius is an overwhelming musical experience. Cardinal Newman’s poem tells of the journey of a man’s soul after death - 'Gerontius' may be translated roughly as 'old man'.

Elgar was given a copy of the poem in 1889 as a wedding present and a decade later for the 1900 Birmingham Festival delivered his setting which luxuriates in music of rare power and eloquence that traces the vision of the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgement before God.

We are delighted to welcome Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, renowned for their performances of Elgar's masterpiece, with a truly stellar cast, including one of the finest mezzo sopranos in the world, Alice Coote, and our own Festival Chorus, under the baton of the eminent British conductor David Parry.
