Mendelssohn, Cherubini and Chopin were acquaintances and it was Cherubini who assured Mendelssohn’s father that his 16 year old son should be allowed to become a professional musician. Chopin, aged only 20, wrote his Piano Concerto No 2 and was the soloist for its first performance in 1830. Tonight we will hear Chopin’s own chamber arrangement of this glorious concerto as part of our celebrations of his 200th anniversary.
The highly successful Emperor String Quartet, BBC artists since 1993 and the first British group to win the Evian/Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, resume their partnership this season with Leon McCawley for a series of celebratory performances.
