The English Chamber Orchestra is one of the world's leading chamber orchestras, having performed in more countries than any other orchestra, recorded over 1,200 works and played with the world's greatest soloists in its 47 years of history.

Together with the Newbury Spring Festival Chorus and a line up of top British soloists including one of Britain's most eminent singers Sir John Tomlinson, the ECO will perform Mendelssohn's magnificent Elijah, under the direction of David Parry, one of England's finest operatic and choral conductors.

Mendelssohn enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with England, including friendship with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His dramatic oratorio Elijah is one of his greatest achievements, and was written for the Birmingham Festival of 1946. Tonight's performance will be sung in English as it was at that first performance.
