Russian State Symphony Orchestra

Saturday 17 May

Alexander Slutsky   conductor
Dmitri Alexeev   piano
Mussorgsky   Night on a Bare Mountain
Prokofiev   Piano Concerto No.2
Tchaikovsky   Symphony No.5

For 70 years the Russian State Symphony Orchestra has maintained the status of leading orchestra of the country and is a special pride of the Russian culture.

There is nothing quite like the sound of a Russian orchestra playing Russian music. Tchaikovsky's 5th is a typically emotional response to the forces of fate, while Mussorgsky colourfully depicts a witches' Sabbath. At the heart of the programme comes one of the most challenging of all the virtuoso piano concertos, Prokofiev's Second Concerto is a tour-de-force. Played by Russian pianist Dmitri Alexeev, one of the world's most highly regarded artists, it is a rare opportunity not to be missed.
