SUMMARY:Britten’s Spring Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Fifty years after the composer’s death\, writer and broadcaster Tony Scotland traces Benjamin Britten’s stormy journey to self-discovery through three defining – and technically illegal – relationships in the late 1930s: with the composer Lennox Berkeley\, ten years his senior; the German poet Wulff Scherchen\, still a teenager; and the tenor Peter Pears\, who was to become his lifelong partner. \nOnce a voice of Radio Three\, Tony Scotland is the author of ten books\, including Wulff – Britten’s Young Apollo. \nTony Scotland writer and broadcaster \nSponsored by Martelize \n\n

SUMMARY:Brahms’ A German Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Building on the recent successes of the Festival Chorus we’re delighted to be presenting them for this special performance of Brahms‘ A German Requiem. This so-called “London” version of the Requiem was originally created in 1869 by the composer as a four-hand piano version of the complete work\, incorporating voice and orchestra parts together for keyboard performance. It was not\, therefore\, simply a setting of the choral work with piano reduction of the orchestral parts\, and will provide a powerful showcase for our excellent chorus. \nFor tonight’s performance under the baton of Tom Primrose\, our own Festival Chorus will be joined by two remarkable young soloists. Hilary Cronin is already a Festival favourite and is without doubt one of the leading sopranos of her generation. James Atkinson is a BBC New Generation Artist (2023-2025) and winner of the 2022 Royal Over-Seas League Singers Prize. \nPerformers\nNewbury Spring Festival Chorus\nHilary Cronin soprano\nJames Atkinson baritone\nLibby Burgess piano\nSebastian Wybrew piano\nTom Primrose conductor \nProgramme\nBrahms A German Requiem \n(NB There is no interval in this concert) \nSponsored by\nMr & Mrs John Skinner\nMr & Mrs Mark Edwards\nCH-R Family Solicitors \nPLEASE NOTE this concert should be booked via the Festival website only or by phoning the office on 01635 528766 \n\n\n Free for under 30s\n
