Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, a gem of the English repertoire, encompasses light and shade and is an inspiring force performed here by leading young clarinettist James Gilbert. The pieces in this evening’s programme explore the theme of ‘Night’ in different ways; both the fear and uncertainty that it can bring, but mainly the opportunity it creates for light shining through darkness, whether to guide or comfort us. The Fantasia Orchestra is formed of some of the country’s most exciting young musicians, brought together under the baton of its founder and conductor Tom Fetherstonhaugh.
