Allan Clayton with London Mozart Players

As you may already know, the opening night of Newbury Spring Festival features one of the world’s greatest tenors, Allan Clayton. He will be singing Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, with the London Mozart Players and horn soloist Ben Goldscheider.

Britten’s Serenade sets thematically linked (night, sleep, dreams) texts by Blake, Tennyson, Keats and more, framed by haunting prologues and epilogues played on the solo horn. If you are unfamiliar with the Serenade, this podcast is a fantastic introduction to it.

It is no exaggeration to say that Allan Clayton is one of the greatest tenors the UK has ever produced. He is an acclaimed and experienced interpreter of Britten’s music, having won critical acclaim across the board for his starring role in Peter Grimes at the Royal Opera House back in 2022. It really is quite the coup that Allan is coming to perform at the Festival!

As I’m sure you know, bookings can be made online, by phone (01635 522733) and in person (Market Place, Newbury RG14 5BD) through the Corn Exchange Box Office.

I’m really looking forward to celebrating the opening night of the Festival with you; I do hope you can make it.
