Choral Pilgrimage: Author of Light

We’re delighted to welcome The Sixteen back to the Festival following the cancellation of 2020, with their Choral Pilgrimage focussing on Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell, which must surely rank among some of the finest choral works ever written.

Deeply affected by WW1 with constant news of many of his pupils being killed in action, Parry sought poetry that would reflect not only peace and unity and that search for a better world but also an escape from the horrors of war.

Three short works by the poet and lutenist Campion, coupled with medieval carols which explore patriotic ceremony provide a suitable variety of sound worlds to serve as an introduction for the rich sonority of Parry’s songs.

Sponsored by Mr and Mrs David Bruce, The Greenwood Trust and Dame Theresa Sackler and an anonymous supporter
