The beautiful venues of the Newbury Spring Festival, and the windows of St Nicolas Church

There are many wonderful things about the Festival, but one of the things the Festival is known for is the beautiful venues we visit. We range from churchs that seat only 80 people, through to St Nicolas Church where we fit full symphony orchestras and audiences of over 500.

It’s St Nicolas Church that’s the focus of attention today. Have you ever taken time to look at the amazing stained glass windows?

Rick Coward will be a familiar face to many Festival audience members. He’s been a long standing Festival Steward and can regularly be found helping audiences and selling drinks at the bar etc. He is however, also Churchwarden of St Nicolas Church, and a keen art historian.

There is a remarkable story behind the windows – what they depict and how a tremendous local community effort, over decades,  secured their installation.

Rick recently went into Kennet Radio’s Newbury studio to talk about how the church was transformed into how we know it today.
