Directed by prize-winning violinist, Akiko Ono, the Maiastra Piano Quintet is the result of a recent course run by The Aidan Woodcock Charitable Trust, which provides opportunities for emerging and talented young professionals who are hoping to make chamber music a major part of their careers.
In today’s programme we shall hear Schumann’s much-loved piano quintet. Although written for his wife to play the piano part, illness led to her place being taken by Mendelssohn at the first performance. It will be followed by Fauré’s D minor Piano Quintet, a sublime work which is warm and comforting.
